  1. The way it works is once your job ends, whether voluntarily or by being laid off or fired, you have to turn in your work permit. Upon turning it in, you are now eligible for the retirement visa again. You are also eligible to pay all the fees again. If your place of work is holding your work permit, they are supposed to turn it in within ten days of the termination of your employment, so I'm told. It is your responsibility to make sure they do or report them to the immigration authorities if they fail to turn it in.
  2. That is true, but this is definitely not the West. We're not in Kansas anymore.
  3. Technically, no, but many bars do go topless and bottomless anyway when they are reasonably certain they won't be raided by the police that night.
  4. I went with Italian. If I could eat only one cuisine or the rest of my life, that would be my preference.
  5. What is most difficult for me to believe is in 1909 my father was already 2 years old. He remembered things such as lamplighters who came around in the evening to light the gas street lights and then again in the morning to turn them off. He remembered going to nickelodeons. He was 20 years old when the first movie with sound came out. He remembered his grandmother sending him to the local speakeasy almost daily to bring home a bucket of beer. He said he was at an awkward age because he was too young to fight in World War I and too old to fight in World War II. His father used to talk about the 1910 coming of Halley's Comet. He said it lasted two weeks and was so bright that you read by the light at night and it was also visible even during the day.
  6. I think the craziest of all are the people who carry infants on their motorbikes and the infants have no protection of any kind. No helmet, no nothing.
  7. There are times when I think that part is still the same.
  8. It's because of the quality of the motorbikes, the style of driving, and the roads. It's because of the stupidity of drivers who don't look where they are going and come zooming out of intersections. It's because of the constant going the wrong way on divided roads and one-way streets.
  9. The buffalo race is on Saturday, October 3 this year.Further information is available at http://www.tatnews.org/events/events/2009/oct/4140.asp
  10. I know how it is right now. If you don't have a work permit, then don't work in Thailand. If you are caught working without a work permit you will face criminal charges, heavy expenses, and possible prison terms and deportation. If you want to work in Thailand, make sure to get a work permit first. For those who think I am incorrect about this, I suggest consulting a Thai attorney and immigration officials before you attempt to work.
  11. There is also a new web site that you may want to check: http://pattayagaytv.com
  12. I agree with you. For all intents and purposes it already is legal. Prostitution is against Thai law, but there is little or no enforcement of that law and I see no evidence that there ever was enforcement. There is so much prostitution in Thailand that I doubt the police have the manpower to even try to enforce it or enforce regulating it if it becomes legalized.
  13. That is true. I think you never see topless Thai women on that beach or on any other beach in all of Thailand.
  14. If you are interested you can find commentaries on YouTube by Vincent Bugliosi, who was the prosecutor in the Manson case. If I recall, there were two Helter Skelter films. I have the older one starring Steve Railsback as Charles Manson on DVD. The acting is incredible. The actors were totally believable. The actress who played Susan Atkins was terrific at bringing out the frightening aspects of Susan Atkins. Steve Railsback, of course, was more like Charles Manson than Charles Manson was, with those maniacal eyes and his voice.
  15. In Thailand both are regularly used. I have been to places where only chopsticks are used. Many restaurants provide both western utensils and chopsticks. The Thais do use spoons, both western types and oriental types. Also, Thai food is almost never served with a knife. They use the side of the spoon instead of a knife to cut food.
  16. Yes. They don't appeal to lvdkeyes. I am one that they appeal to on occasion. I have a close gay friend who wants only lady boys. Everyone is different, which is why I say to you to try some lady boy bars to see if they appeal to you or not. I like the ones who do not over-makeup themselves. Some use so much makeup that they make Tammy Bakker look like a beginner. They must spend hours and hours every day applying their makeup and probably spend far too high a percentage of their income buying it. That type and the really swishy overly feminine types that dress and publicly behave like cheap sluts never appeal to me. There are others that are not like that and those are the ones that do it for me. But I cannot tell you, or even myself, what it is about them that I often find very appealing. I cannot put a definition on it. Two can be standing right next to each other, both being almost exactly the same type, but one will appeal to me and the other doesn't. I don't know why. I am happy to be living in a society where I can walk down the street hand in hand with a lady boy and if she is an obvious lady boy the only icy stares I ever get come from foreigners. Thailand is a country where you do not have to be embarrassed or ashamed if you like lady boys.
  17. Imagine the nut cases that would even want to marry her. And one of them is a lawyer! How would you like to be his client?I normally would not wish death on anyone, but with Susan Atkins I am glad she's gone. I have no sympathy for her. She suffered through 40 years in prison and died a terrible death and went through the disappointment of parole refusals. Good! Now if there really is a Hell, that's where I hope she is.
  18. Can you tell us any companies or banks that will finance a vehicle for foreigners? Be that as it may, I can't think of a good reason not to display it. If it is displayed, then I am less likely to go through a time consuming paperwork inspection in the event of a police stop.
  19. My tastes are by no means limited to lady boys. Sometimes I'm into them and sometimes not. I don't know how to answer your question. That's like asking someone what they like about the color green. It's either something you like, something that does not appeal to you, or something that appeals to you on occasion. When you come to Thailand, try going to a good lady boy bar and decide for yourself if it is something you can get into.
  20. You are confusing me with Michael. I am not Michael. My name is . . . On second thought I prefer to be anonymous, so I think we'll leave it at Thaimo.I have had no problems with my gas stove and I have come to prefer it to an electric stove. Power failures are not uncommon here, but even when the power goes out, with a gas stove I can still cook. It is more difficult to keep clean, though.
  21. If I am correct, at one time that was a good way around it, but I understand they don't put up with that anymore. I understand they will check to see if the corporation is legitimate and whether the involved Thais (I think there has to be five) actually have the means to be part of the corporation. I also understand that the foreigner cannot be the majority owner. I am not certain about the above, but I do know that I am partially correct. A few years ago foreigners who had bought that way were frightened they would lose their homes when Thailand announced a crackdown, but the Thai authorities decided not to grandfather it in. But anything one wants to buy today by forming a Thai corporation is going to be faced with far more stringent checks than only a few years ago.
  22. I have never found good Italian sausage anywhere in Thailand, not even in Italian restaurants. Do you have a recipe for making your own Italian sausage?
  23. I am sure everyone has his own favorite Pasta, sauce, and meatballs recipe and I hope you will share your favorites. Here is one of my personal favorites: Mama Lee's Recipe for Meatballs and Sauce (for spaghetti, penne or other pasta) Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef 1 cup plain bread crumbs 3 garlic cloves 2 teaspoons fennel seed 2 teaspoons sweet basil 1 teaspoon oregano 2 medium-sized onions 2 teaspoons parsley 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon pepper 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese (or Romano) a little cooking oil (I prefer olive oil) 2 eggs 3-4 tablespoons water 1 12 oz. can tomato paste 1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes 3 large bay leafs Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Chop up the garlic into little pieces. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with the breadcrumbs, parsley, 1 teaspoon of the salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, garlic, eggs and parmesan cheese. Wash your hands thoroughly and mix these ingredients together, adding the water until it is the right consistency. Shape the meatballs into 1 1/2" round and put them on a cookie sheet. Place into an oven for 5-10 min only. Set aside and make the sauce below: Chop up the onions. Add a little oil to a frying pan and saute the onions on med heat until they just start to turn brown. Drain on a paper towel and set aside. Put a large pot onto a burner on low heat. Add crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Fill the empty 28 oz. crushed tomato can with water and pour into the pot. Fill and pour 2 more times. Fill the empty 12 oz. tomato paste can with water and pour into the pot. Fill and pour two more times. Fill the empty 12 oz. tomato paste can with the red rose wine and pour into the pot. Add the remaining 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Then add the onions, sweet basil, fennel seed and bay leafs. Mix well. Add the meatballs. Cook on low for 5 hours, stirring occasionally. Pour over cooked pasta and serve with the meatballs and add Parmesan cheese to your personal taste.
  24. Thank you for posting this. In the USA I was always a Tony Roma's fan and I am happy to know there is one in Bangkok.
  25. Another glitch seems to be the View New Content function. For me it does show some of the new postst, but it does not show all the new posts. Is it just me or are others noticing a similar problem?
