    Dog Meat

I recall reading somewhere that the Chow, from China, was originally bred for food and that is where the slang term "chow," a term that means food, came from.
  2. Possibly, if these coins are easily distinguishable from existing coins. When they came out with the 2 baht coin, it was very confusing because it was close to the size of the 5 baht coins. They have since changed the newer coins to a gold color, but most of the originals are still in circulation. I don't see any particular advantage to 20 and 50 baht coins. I would prefer to see bills in denominations larger than 1000 baht. I do not understand why 2000, 3000, or 5000 baht bills are not available. Perhaps it's because so many of the shops can't make change even for the 1000 baht bills.
  3. I am always happy to read such a list rather than be on such a list.
  4. For addresses of Thai consuls in the USA, why not simply place a telephone call to the Embassy of Thailand and ask? The embassy would have all of that information.
  5. If visiting ladyboy bars in Pattaya is of interest to you, then you might want to have a look at the following web site: http://www.pattayashemales.com
  6. I wonder just how serious about it the authorities really are. Why can't they have the police start fining tuk-tuk drivers if the fares are not prominently displayed? The police are quick enough to stop motorcycle drivers. Why can't they require the hotels to hand out fare sheets when guests check in and keep additional copies in the packet that usually appears on the desk in the rooms, and make sure that sheet has a number to call if the driver attempts to gouge the price? If they want the tourists to know the fares, it seems to me it would be easy enough to make sure tourists are informed whether the tuk-tuk drivers cooperate or not. There is a similar problem in Pattaya. There are taxis available in Pattaya now, although not very many, but trying to get the drivers to turn on the meter is practically impossible. I don't see any reason why there isn't readily available information with a number for tourists to call if a taxi driver refuses to use the meter and fines or even loss of licenses for drivers that won't comply. I don't mind paying a reasonable fare, but I mind very much being cheated. I'm sorry they don't make much money, but I'm not the one who establishes the fares and their salaries. It shouldn't be my problem or yours. Bangkok seems to have succeeded. Prior to enforcement of turning on the meters it was extremely difficult to get Bangkok taxi drivers to use the meter. Ever since the regulations went into effect I have never even had to ask. Every taxi I have been in since the regulations went into effect has always turned on the meter. If they can get the Bangkok drivers to comply, what's so difficult about getting taxi drivers in other cities to comply?

    Pattaya Carnival

There is no such thing. Whatever you hears on the news must have been erroneous.

    Pattaya Carnival

As you head south on Jomtien Beach Road you will spot a beach area where bleachers have been set up. That is the multi purpose area.
  9. I have mailed things to the USA from Thailand many times. So far anything I have ever mailed, including letters and packages, arrived. It usually takes 7 to 10 days unless I opt for express mail. I used to trek to the post office, but there are plenty of shops that provide mail services. I have found them to be perfectly reliable and whatever I send arrives just as quickly as anything I mail directly from the post office. Also, there are none of the long lines that frequently occur at post offices and they also have everything from packing materials to envelopes available. Thailand also has FedEx, UPS, and DHL. Often these same postal shops provide those services. With the tracking number you can follow the progress of your mail online and you will also know it has been delivered. With registered mail, Thailand does not provide return receipt service. You need to keep the receipt in case you need to have the mail traced. The receipt has the code number for your mail.
  10. That is correct. Their regular office hours are 7:30am to 11:00am. Then they close, but reopen from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. They prefer that you make an appointment. While they still accommodate walk-ins, the embassy has stated that the time will come when they will accommodate only those who have appointments. You can make your appointment online at: https://evisaforms.state.gov/acs/default.asp?postcode=BNK&appcode=1 If they do, I have not heard about it. You will have to contact the embassy and ask. In Pattaya, there is a British Consul, Mr. Barry Kenyon. He can be found nearly every day at the Pattaya immigration office on Soi 5, Jomtien. I do not know if there are any British consuls in any other major cities in Thailand.
  11. I agree. I don't see how a person's sex life is anyone's business but their own, even for public figures. When it comes to being outed, I'm opposed to doing that to people. If someone wants the world to know he is gay, then I think he is entitled to be the one to say so. And since you don't know what kinds of problems outing people may cause for them, I think it's a terribly mean thing to do. Even public figures are entitled to their privacy. What does her sex life have to do with Meredith Baxter's acting career? Nothing I know of. I see no reason why one's sex life should be included as part of the price they have to pay for fame.

    Aliens

This is very strange. Several years ago I downloaded SETI out of curiosity. It didn't interest me (and I never found any aliens. I was so disappointed.) and a simple uninstall got rid of the software. The article does not say how many computers SETI was installed on, but I can't imagine why it should cost anything, let alone over a million dollars, to remove the software.
  13. I think it would be worth a try, although I don't think there is much of a problem in Bangkok. I very rarely hear complaints about the Bangkok taxi drivers. In Bangkok there are the tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis and I doubt those would be practical for ordering and paying online. Also, how many foreign tourists are going to even have a mobile phone that works in Bangkok? In one way, something similar to the article is being done and has existed for many years. Those are the pre-paid taxis available at the airport.
  14. Welcome to our site. Yes, you have come to the right place. Please feel free to let us know of any questions or concerns. We will be happy to help you. That's why we're here.
  15. Lvdkeyes, your recipes are always the best ever! Now I have a challenge for you. Although I've never tried it, everything I read that people post about ostrich meat makes it sound as if it is very good. I see ostrich meat sold in some of the grocery stores, but I have no idea how to cook it. If you were going to make ostrich meat, how would you do it and what would be your recipe?
  16. Female restroom attendants are still difficult for me to get used to. If one is already in there, doing her cleaning when I have to go, I go into a stall and shut the door. If I am already at a urinal when one walks in, I finish what I started, but I'm still very uncomfortable with it. While it is true that the cleaning women aren't paying any attention, it still makes me uncomfortable. It always seems as if they must be waiting just for me. Almost every time I've gotta go, that's when a female restroom attendant comes in. Only a couple weeks ago I was traveling. I was in the middle of nowhere and needed to stop for gasoline. As long as I was there, I used the restroom. Even there, would you believe a female attendant started cleaning? The last time that restroom appeared to have been cleaned was at least a year ago, but as soon as I enter, there she is. Arrrgggghhhhhh!!!!
  17. I'm certain of it. But even if I am wrong, you can still go in and submit a new address report before the 90 days expires. I did that myself, more than a month before the expiration date, and no questions were asked. But yes, you are definitely required to report a change of address. Keeping a current record of your address is the reason behind the 90-day address reports, which is why you are required to report any address changes as quickly as possible.
  18. When he moves to Hua Hin, he has to go to immigration and register his new address. That's the law. I believe it has to be done within 7 or 10 days, I forget which. Then he'll be registered in Hua Hin and will be able to renew his visa there.

    Dr Aree

Yes, I'm pleased with my dentist, but since Dr. Aree is getting such a good review here I want to try her too. May the best dentist win.
  20. The explanation seems plausible to me, but I have no idea what "soapys" are. For me, that is a new term.
  21. It is truly a sad and sickening aspect of Thailand that news reports about foreigners who come here to molest children is nothing new and nothing unusual. While I am happy this man was caught and is now suffering the consequences, the frightening thought is wondering how many others come to Thailand for similar purposes and have not been caught, along with how many more are planning out their first trip.

    Dr Aree

That's good enough for me. I am going to try her next time I go to a dentist. Do you have a contact telephone number for appointments?
