  1. I have enjoyed this show for a few years and this years looks like it is going to be explosive! The first week just came out and it was good. The two coaches look like they are going to go at it big time this year!
  2. Pattaya, September 19 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : At around 9pm on Friday Night, Police Colonel Atisawit, the Superintendant of Pattaya’s Immigration Office led a raid of a venue located in Soi LK Metro in Central Pattaya called “The Devil’s Den” which promotes itself as an escort and hostess service on their website. Officers entered the establishment and detained 21 female employees and its English owner known only as “Jack”. The club, formerly known as “The Hell Club” has encountered problems with the authorities in the past and this time, Immigration were made aware of the venues website which they claim offered sexual services to clients in exchange for money which is illegal here in Thailand. The English Owner of the venue denies all allegations made against him and his venue and the case is currently ongoing at the Immigration Office in Jomtien. http://www.pattayaone.net/news/2009/september/news_19_09_52_2.shtml
  3. GOVT DECLARES MARTIAL LAW AS VILLAGERS, POLICE CLASH WITH PAD; YELLOW SHIRTS TO READ SOVEREIGNTY DECLARATION Writer: KING-OUA LAOHONG Published: 20/09/2009 at 12:00 AM Newspaper section: News SI SA KET : Dozens of protesters, police and villagers were injured in fiery clashes near the border with Cambodia yesterday as a protest by the People's Alliance for Democracy spun out of control. The government declared martial law as PAD supporters, in a protest over sovereignty, met unexpected resistance from hundreds of Si Sa Ket villagers who blocked their path. The PAD was trying to march to a disputed border area close to Preah Vihear temple. Stick-wielding protesters clashed repeatedly with riot police and villagers who were trying to keep them out. Nearby, soldiers set up barricades to stop the PAD reaching the border area disputed with Cambodia. They reinforced the Khao Phra Viharn national park office in Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket. But the government was forced to declare martial law after protesters were able to break through barricades to reach the military-controlled area. The clashes between PAD protesters and villagers left scores of people on both sides injured, including two people in a critical condition. Sert Piewkhao, 26, a local villager, was shot in the neck while PAD supporter Promsak Ritkraikul, 44, was hit in the eye by slingshots. To ease the crisis, the government agreed to let 76 PAD representatives read aloud a prepared statement today at Pha Mor E Daeng, which is close to the disputed area. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said giving the PAD its say could help restore peace. Anyone who broke the law at the gathering would be punished, he said. The government's concession capped a day of drama which started when PAD member Veera Somkwamkid and Charoen Muphankhachorn led about 2,000 supporters on a protest to assert Thai sovereignty over disputed territory near Preah Vihear temple. They planned to march to the temple entrance to protest against Cambodia's decision to build new houses in a nearby 4.6 square kilometre area not settled by the two countries. The World Court awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962. Accompanied by so-called PAD guards, the demonstrators arrived in the province in cars, buses and vans. They were stopped by hundreds of villagers at Ban Phumsarol in Kantharalak district. The residents blockaded the road to the park near the temple. Crowd control riot police in full gear were on standby. Residents opposed the PAD protest, fearing it would aggravate the border situation and harm their livelihood. "They [PAD protesters] are here for just a couple of days. But we and the Cambodian people are here for life so we do not want any complications. "The temple dispute has been going for years. Why protest now?" said Boonreum Khobutr, a village head. Si Sa Ket governor Rapi Pongbuppakij and Si Sa Ket deputy police chief Amnuay Mahapol asked both sides to back off, but to no avail. After hours of trading insults, clashes broke out about 1.20pm. Slingshots, wooden stakes, rocks and blades were used as weapons. The PAD guards broke through the barricades, taking protesters to a forest fire control station where they were prepared to spend the night. Mr Veera and Suranaree Task Force commander Maj-Gen Chavalit Choonhasarn held talks for two hours after which the protesters retreated to the Sisa Asoke Buddhist community, which is a branch of Santi Asoke with close affiliations to the PAD. Speaking while the negotiations were underway, Second Army Region commander Lt Gen Wibulsak Neepal said the army could not guarantee the safety of protesters. He had proposed to army commander Anupong Paojinda that a group of 20 PAD representatives be allowed to enter the restricted area to make a declaration. "The army chief has agreed. The PAD demonstrators have to leave the area as soon as they finish reading their statement," he said. PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang yesterday distanced all five PAD leaders from the Preah Vihear campaign. "Mr Veera is leading the campaign so any talks should be conducted with him," he said after the clashes. Earlier, Gen Anupong said he doubted the PAD's campaign to enter the restricted area would do any good to themselves or the country. "They will put themselves in danger if they sneak into areas which are not yet clear of landmines. And if they are arrested, Cambodia will accuse us of encroachment," he said. http://bangkokpost.com/news/local/24153/pad-protest-ends-in-bloodshed
  4. It is human nature that impels the majority of us to be followers. Normal people, after five or six years of wandering in the desert, will begin to ask questions of their leadership. But a faith-based leadership leans heavily on the desire not to be wrong. No one likes being wrong, and many, if not most of us, will jump through hoops to prove that we are not wrong. This defines our political landscape today. The Republican party is aimless and wandering; they have lost the centrist and the independent voter so all that is left of them is the far right wing. As the party collapses in on itself and becomes more and more fanatical, the political work of a lifetime is slipping away. The eight years of the Bush Presidency have destroyed the economy and damaged the political process itself. The center and independent voters have moved towards the lesser of two evils, the Democrats in name only. Anyone want to hold a rally to support Max Baucus? The political spectrum has bent so far to the right you have Republican House and Senate members surviving only in their safe districts. Then you have the Blue Dogs who, when compared with Democrats of forty years ago, are in fact moderate Republicans. They live in political limbo. Neither fish nor fowl, they accept their committee chairmanships and mute what ought to be a Democratic majority. There is a joke that I heard many years ago about a drunk on an airplane. He was having a good time talking and cutting up. Next to him was a large Texan with a ten-gallon hat. Trying to avoid the drunk, the Texan leaned back in his seat and pulled his Stetson down over his eyes. As the plane became airborne the drunk began to feel queasy and suddenly, without warning, yacked into the lap of the big Texan. The Texan slowly pushed the brim of his hat back up with his thumb and looked at the drunk as if he were going to kill him. The drunk looks at him and says, “You feeling better now, fella?” Those teabaggers and 9-12ers in the million moron march have been following a political party that has yacked into America’s lap. All that is left for them is to divert the blame, and fortunately there is a 24-hour, full spectrum propaganda network running at all times. It doesn’t have to be true and it doesn’t even have to make sense. In fact, the more outrageous the better. Since the beginning of the “Birther” movement I have just scratched my head in wonder. My first wife was born in Baden-Baden Germany. She was two years old when she first set foot on American soil, and she did so with an American passport. How? Because her mother was an American citizen. Barack Obama could have been born at an intergalactic trading post on Rigel Three, and by virtue of his mother's citizenship he would be an American citizen. It is too easy for the left to call racism. It's true but you won’t win arguments or defeat your opposition just by calling them bigots. It is a component of their rage but it’s not the main component. Millions of Americans pay little to no attention to what is going on in Washington politics. They watch TV sound bites or Internet or cable channels, but that viewing now more than ever is dictated by what they believe in the first place. Twenty percent believe Fox News, no matter what sort of hogwash they spew out. The latest campaign is the ACORN employees filmed proposing tax evasion by setting up a brothel. Those Fox minions, the Beckinites and the Rushinites, believe that this scandal will lead directly to the White House. They believe that an American attorney working for green jobs is really a Communist. Have you ever heard of an attorney that wanted to give things away to the state? You cannot underestimate these people; their lack of education or sophistication means very little. It wasn’t intellectuals that made Mussolini Il Duce. It was the intellectuals who laughed at those nutty brown shirts in Germany in the 1920’s. We are witnessing the demise not of one political party but of two. The Republicans are splintered but so are the Democrats. Obama says one thing, Baucus another, and Pelosi something else. The Democrats, unable to pass any real legislation, sink into the abyss of followers with their nose to the wind of public opinion but dependent on corporate support for survival. So you have a Republican Party that is splintered and fanaticized and a Democratic Party that is really a moderate Republican Party stuck to the teat of Corporate America and unwilling to let go. Barack Obama has been called Hitler, Stalin, the devil, a Socialist, a Communist, everything but what he really is. He is a centrist Democrat, politically to the right of Bill Clinton, to the right of Jimmy Carter, to the right of John Kennedy. He is far to the right of Harry Truman and even farther to the right of Franklin Roosevelt. He is the modern day equivalent of Herbert Hoover. Like Hoover he believes that it is more important to bail out the banks than the people. He wants corporate entities left in place as he tinkers in the margins of financial regulations. He has done nothing to help union workers; he allowed the gutting of the employee’s Free Choice Act. The take over of GM, which the right has complained about virulently, was in fact the right wing solution. The Democrats were against bankruptcy and the Republicans were in favor of bankruptcy. What did the President’s car czars decide? That the Republicans were right, bankruptcy was the only way to go. This freed General Motors specifically to dump toxic properties onto the taxpayers and allowed GM to abandon properties on which taxes were owed forcing local and state government to seize worthless properties in lieu of large tax bills. The bankruptcy allows GM to go anywhere on planet Earth they wish to go to build cars, and they are already expanding plants in Mexico and China. The cash for clunkers bill that has received so much praise was in fact nothing more than a public subsidy for corporate America. It worked so well that of three billion dollars invested two billion dollars of it went straight to Asia. It temporarily buoyed the economy while expanding our trade deficit; yet three billion for a bounce is not much bang for the buck! It is Hooverism, if you help the corporations long enough, sooner or later the economy as a whole will pick up. The left has their own fanatics and you ruffle their feathers when you imply that Obama is not all that he should be. It is the same fanaticism, that speak no evil, because our guy is in office and we should blindly support him or her. They will take offense at my comparing of Obama to Herbert Hoover. In 1929 Hoover set up a two billion-dollar fund to offer low interest loans to business. He was against any direct aid to struggling Americans. Obama supported the bailout of Wall Street and the refunding of the banks. In 1932 Roosevelt redirected Hoover's fund toward direct mortgage purchase by the federal government. At one time the federal government owned 12 percent of all mortgages and created the thirty-year mortgage. The Obama solution is exactly the same as the Bush solution, to allow the banks to settle mortgage problems as they see fit. And how’s that plan doing? At best, at best, 14 percent of all homeowners in mortgage trouble are being assisted by their lender. That means with an expected three million more foreclosures this year, 2,580,000 will receive no assistance whatsoever. Bush’s plan aided one percent of homeowners and on average Obama’s plan aids ten percent. Now, if you are a bank and getting your money for free (.25 percent) and lending it out on credit cards at eighteen percent, would you rather continue to do that or save a mortgage? The Obama plan awards banks $1,000 for every mortgage they renegotiate; yet for $2,500 they can borrow a million dollars in new money and write off the bad debts at the end of the year for a lower tax bill. The banks might want to help the homeowners but there is no money in it! Obama is Hoover, not FDR, so it is only fair to believe that many of those on the left are as badly educated as those on the right. But the issues facing this country are reaching critical mass and the time for dithering will soon be over. I’ve seen it called the collapse of the left, but in fact there is no left. The true left was euthanized long ago; we have a center right party and a hard right party. They decide whether to help banks and business a little bit or a lot. If it were otherwise we would have single payer healthcare done and done. The lost children are on all sides of us, left, right, conservative, moderate, liberal. They are lost because we are a nation of meaningless labels, which subvert a craven political class to use propaganda and smoke and mirrors to score points and to call it educating the public. They call rolling backwards moving forwards. They call freeing corporations to move overseas a bailout to save jobs, and call it healthcare reform where you might pay less to your health insurer while your government subsidizes the health insurance industry by creating twenty million new customers. It’s not Socialist or Communist. It is not conservative and definitely not liberal or progressive. It is center right American fascism.
  5. As President Barack Obama goes on an unprecedented presidential blitz of media appearances, the White House is in a war of words with the network that did not get an interview: Fox. "We figured Fox would rather show 'So You Think You Can Dance' than broadcast an honest discussion about health insurance reform," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told ABC News. That's a reference to the program the Fox network aired at 8 p.m. on Sept. 9, when other major broadcast networks were airing the president's speech to the joint session of Congress. The idea of punishing Fox for not airing the president's speech didn't sit well with Chris Wallace, the anchor of Fox News Sunday. "They are the biggest bunch of crybabies I have dealt with in my 30 years in Washington," Wallace said on the Fox News program "The O'Reilly Factor." http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/obamas-media-tour-include-fox-news/story?id=8621065

  7. PRETORIA, South Africa (CNN) -- The president of Athletics South Africa has admitted that he lied about gender tests on runner Caster Semenya before her gold-medal win at the World Athletics Championships last month. The national sports body has always denied that it agreed to the tests before the race in Berlin, Germany -- an event that kicked off international controversy over the 18-year-old Semenya's gender. But after South Africa's Mail & Guardian newspaper printed e-mails on Friday showing that ASA President Leonard Chuene was aware of the tests, he held a news conference to apologize. "I now realize that it was an error of judgment and I would like to apologize unconditionally," Chuene said on Saturday, according to South Africa's SAPA news agency. After receiving the results of the tests, the South Africa team doctor requested the 18-year-old Semenya be withdrawn from the 800-meter race she ended up winning, Chuene said. But Chuene said he refused to do it because the sport's international governing body did not request withdrawal. He also said withdrawing Semenya might have looked bad. "If we did not let her run, we would be confirming that she is not normal," Chuene told the news conference in the capital, Pretoria. The e-mails printed by the Mail & Guardian are an exchange between team doctor Harold Adams and ASA General Manager Molatelo Malehopo, with Chuene copied in. "After thinking about the current confidential matter I would suggest that we make the following decisions," Adams wrote on August 5, more than a week before the Berlin race. "1. We get a (gynecological) opinion and take it to Berlin. 2. We do nothing and I will handle these issues if they come up in Berlin. Please think and get back to me ASAP." An e-mail response from Malehopo to Adams, sent the same day, says: "I will suggest that you go ahead with the necessary tests that the IAAF might need." he controversy over Semenya erupted after she crushed her rivals in the 800 meters and secured victory in one minute, 55.45 seconds -- the best women's time in the world this year. Semenya's masculine build and dominant performance fueled existing questions about her gender, and the International Association of Athletics Federations -- which oversees the sport worldwide -- ordered tests on her. Reports in two newspapers last week said the results of the tests showed Semenya has both male and female characteristics. The IAAF declined to confirm those reports and said a decision in the case would come in late November. The IAAF said it sought tests on Semenya's gender before the Berlin championships because questions had been raised after her winning performance at the African junior championships in July. South Africans have rallied behind Semenya, angrily dismissing reports about her gender. Semenya's relatives and the South Africa team manager have maintained she is female. This week, South Africa's minister for women, children and people with disabilities wrote to the United Nations to complain that Semenya had not been treated in line with international protocols on gender and quality. Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya sent a letter to the U.N. Division for the Advancement of Women, urging it to investigate, SAPA reported. "The questioning of her gender is based on a stereotypic view of the physical features and abilities attributable to women," she wrote in the letter, according to SAPA. "Such stereotypes demonstrate the extent of patriarchy within the world's sporting community." The process of gender verification has undergone big changes since it was first introduced for international competition in the 1960s, the IAAF said. The first mechanism involved "rather crude and perhaps humiliating physical examinations," which soon gave way to mouth swabs to collect chromosomes. There were too many uncertainties with mouth swabs, so the IAAF abandoned them in 1991 and the International Olympic Committee discontinued them in 2000. A proper test has yet to be found, the IAAF said, and the current tests are considered a good interim solution. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/09/19/athletics.caster.semenya.chuene/index.html
  8. "I would like both my admirers and haters to think what good has been done over the past three years. Has the economy improved? What about justice and human rights? And is there fair treatment for bureaucrats?" Thaksin asked. "They accuse me of interfering with independent organisations, and what about the situation these days? They accused me of interfering in the mass media and what's going on today?" he said during his speech. "See you in Thailand soon," he said to conclude his video-link broadcast to red-shirt supporters at their anti-government rally at the Royal Plaza. Earlier, the former premier posted a new Twitter message asking the coup leaders and Thais to analyse if the country was in a better shape three years after the coup toppled his government. "They accused me of not being loyal [to the monarchy], interfering in the media, the independ-ent agencies and failing to solve problems in the three southern border provinces and causing national divisions. Today, are these problems getting solved and is there an improvement?" his message said. -The Nation/ANN http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/Asia/Story/A1Story20090920-168901.html

  11. For me, the IPhone rules. The apps are amazing and there is nothing even close to comparing it to. For Bangkok, you can download maps for the Skytrain, subway, streets, markets, etc. All are easily to understand. You can pick a food place, find reviews, do currency exchanges, get dictionaries and play games. I love the IPhone.
  12. When I am away all I can think about is my next trip back. I know how you feel. November is right around the corner!

    Smoking

You leave your glass there and tell them you are going to smoke and you won't loose your seat. They link the seat to your bill. They will keep an eye on you. If you are a regular, you will never have a problem. If you look shady, they may have a problem. Most bars in Bangkok don't care about the smoking policy and don't enforce them as far as I can see. But, to be on the safe side, step outside.

  20. Khunying Potjaman Damapong yesterday continued efforts to thwart the public prosecutor's seizure of 76 billion baht in assets which it claims were illegally acquired by her former husband, Thaksin Shinawatra while prime minister from 2001-2006. Khunying Potjaman told the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions the assets were amassed legitimately and there were no legal grounds for the court to seize them. The public prosecutor has asked the court to seize the assets from Thaksin and his family members. Khunying Potjaman told the court she started Shin Corporation with Thaksin and her adopted brother Bannapot Damapong in 1976. She denied the claim she and Thaksin owned Win Mark Co, a suspected vehicle for concealing the Shinawatra family's wealth. The firm belongs to a real estate developer from the Middle East, she said. Khunying Potjaman also said she knew nothing about the British Virgin Islands-based company, Ample Rich Management, which was run by her former husband. Ample Rich is alleged to have been a front used to conceal Thaksin's shareholdings in Shin Corp. She said she contributed money to help Thaksin found the Thai Rak Thai Party, which was dissolved for electoral fraud in 2007 after the Thaksin government was toppled in a military coup on Sept 19, 2006. But she never meddled in the party's affairs or her former husband's work as prime minister. Neither did she receive any benefits as a result of his position as prime minister. Khunying Potjaman told the court Thaksin no longer held any overseas assets after they were divorced in Hong Kong last November. The family's 200 million baht house in England, which has refused Thaksin entry, belongs to her, not Thaksin. http://bangkokpost.com/news/local/23916/potjaman-insists-family-assets-of-b76bn-were-legally-earned
  21. Widely distributed video recordings of foreign tourists reputedly being ripped off over damage to jet skis on Phuket and other incidents have been made to damage Thailand's tourism reputation, authorities say. The producers of the video clips - shown on British cable television and YouTube - and the victims of the alleged scams have denied the accusation. Pol Lt Gen Santhan Chayanont, chief of Provincial Police Region 8 which covers the upper South, yesterday said efforts to tarnish Thailand's image might be coordinated. The video clips show a female British tourist being arrested for marijuana possession at a full moon party on Koh Phangan and a British marine and a US marine being threatened to pay exorbitant compensation for damage to rented jet skis on Phuket in separate incidents. The footage, in which Thai police appear, were broadcast as part of the series Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand on Britain's Bravo cable TV station and then spread to the internet. Pol Lt Gen Santhan said the arrest of the British woman was real. She was found with marijuana in her possession. In her testimony through a translator, she confessed. In the video clip she claimed she had to pay 80,000 baht to local police to be released on bail. The other clips feature a Phuket jet ski operator, Vinai Naiman, also known as "JJ", demanding compensation from British and American clients, both marines on rest and recreation leave. In the clip of the British marine, Mr Vinai was seen to go to a storeroom and return with a gun which he dangled by his side. Pol Lt Gen Santhan said the way clips had been made suggested a set up. They had been edited to tarnish the image of both Thai tourism and the police force and presented only the negative side of the story through narrators, he said. Pol Lt Gen Santhan ordered police investigators to find out if any Thai individuals were involved in the making of the footage. They could face criminal charges. He also ordered his subordinates to run a check on the production of the clips and report the findings to him as soon as possible. The producer of the video clips, Gavin Hill, and some of those involved told British freelance journalist Andrew Drummond the footage was not faked or stage-managed and there was no intention to damage Thailand. They insisted they were prepared, if necessary, to make the incidents a diplomatic issue. Phuket governor Wichai Praisa-ngob yesterday said the clips might have been produced by someone who stood to benefit from Thailand tourism losing its competitive edge. Mr Vinai said he had demanded compensation for damaged jet skis from his foreign clients. But the compensation had been settled before the filming. He said he had been tricked into appearing in the clip as the producers claimed they wanted to do a positive documentary about tourism in Phuket. The gun he was seen holding was only an air gun, he insisted. Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa said he did not think the controversy would have a far-reaching effect on the tourism industry. Anusorn Salay, head of a club of jet ski operators on Phuket, yesterday said the club would establish procedures to prevent disputes over jet skis. It would set rates for compensation based on where and how bad the damage was to a ski. http://bangkokpost.com/news/local/23902/police-furious-over-taged-video-nasties
  22. The government plans to reinvoke the Internal Security Act in Bangkok's Dusit district this week to ensure a planned protest by anti-government forces does not get out of control. Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn yesterday said the security law would be in force from Friday to Tuesday because the government was expecting large numbers of protesters at the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship rally called for Saturday. Police, soldiers and civil servants would be deployed to secure order, he said. The government would monitor the situation and decide whether the security law's invocation should be extended. The act allows the Internal Security Operations Command to take over from police to secure law and order if necessary. Opposition Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan, a leader of the anti-government UDD, said his group would rally on Saturday as planned despite the invocation of the security act. The demonstration was called in part to protest against the Sept 19, 2006, coup which toppled the government led by Thaksin Shinawatra and his Thai Rak Thai Party, which was subsequently disbanded for electoral fraud. Mr Jatuporn said the UDD would distribute 50,000 pairs of earplugs to those attending the rally to counter authorities' plans to use long-range acoustic devices to disperse the rally. The government would only prolong the protest by using the acoustic devices, he said. Mr Jatuporn said red shirt protesters from the Northeast would gather in front of the country home of Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda in Nakhon Ratchasima before moving to the rally site in Bangkok at the weekend. Acting national police chief Thanee Somboonsap yesterday said 3,900 policemen would be mobilised for the protest, which was expected to draw at least 20,000 demonstrators. He said police would adopt a clear plan to handle the situation. Police will try to negotiate, avoid the use of weapons and prevent third parties from stirring up unrest. There will be commanders assigned to supervise the situation and every action will be taken in line with a written order. If it becomes necessary to disperse the protest, specially trained police will be deployed and will take the appropriate steps for using weapons and force. That will begin with a show of force and lead to warnings and the use of non-lethal weapons like water cannon, chemicals, tear gas and rubber bullets. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who supervises national security, said the invocation of the security law would not violate anyone's rights. He said protesters had to respect other people's rights, too. The government must invoke the security law to secure public order because UDD demonstrators had instigated unrest in Pattaya and Bangkok in April and the same people who had led those protests would turn up again on Saturday, Mr Suthep said. http://bangkokpost.com/news/politics/23900/govt-invokes-security-act-to-police-udd-rally

  24. I had dinner last night at Roadhouse with some friends. It is not the best BBQ I had tasted but it was good. I thought their brisket was much better than the BBQ Ribs. The atmosphere is really nice and there is a pool table on the 3rd floor. The cost is a bit high at about 800-1000 baht per person but I have found that pretty typical of BBQ ribs in Thailand. Overall, the people who went thought the place was good. It may be a bit pricey but when you are craving some BBQ, I guess people are willing to pay more. I really like the peanuts they gave us at the table. Roadhouse 942 Rama IV Road (corner of Surawong) Open: 10:30am - 1 am http://www.roadhousebarbecue.com/
