lvdkeyes
The report doesn't explain why a healthy appearing guy of 33 years suddenly develops pulmonary edema so severe it kills him. This extracted from the cited report: "Very high blood pressure or heart rate can also put considerable stress on the system. Overdoses of stimulant drugs such as cocaine and even non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines have been associated with pulmonary oedema." Wino
Also from the article, "The most likely triggers for pulmonary oedema are problems with the rhythm of the heart, or the functioning of the heart muscle or a valve. Rhythm irregularities may come on suddenly, such as atrial fibrillation. Heart muscle function can fail as the result of a coronary or, more commonly in younger people, an inflammation of the muscle caused by a virus. If a heart valve is leaky or constricted, such as in aortic stenosis, it can also cause such failure."
lvdkeyes
So, just to say the cause of death was pulmonary edema doesn't tell the whole story.
Wino
So, just to say the cause of death was pulmonary edema doesn't tell the whole story. It sure does not tell the whole story, it tells the cause of death. It is probably a preliminary finding. Maybe we will have the rest of the story, later. lvdkeyes
The cause of death was cessation of breathing and heartbeat. All the rest are contributing factors. Pulmonary edema was one factor in this case.
Wino
Cessation of breathing and heartbeat happens in all deaths. The Times article said “death by acute pulmonary oedema is a combined failure of heart and lung, with the former triggering a build-up of fluid in the latter. The result can be sudden and catastrophic — effectively causing a form of internal suffocation.†Gately most probably died because his heart malfunctioned, thereby allowing fluid to build up in the air sacs of the lungs that lead to his death. Whether this was due to a birth defect of his heart valve, a virus or maybe drugs, we don’t know at this time.
WannaGo
Did I not read somewhere that there was a family history of this? And I can tell you that using too many over-the-counter paid relievers can cause edema. I had a scare of this sort a few years ago because I was taking too much Motrin for back pain. Wino
Did I not read somewhere that there was a family history of this? You are right if the information in the following article is correct. Here is part of it. Stephen Gately's family are "shocked and surprised" by the wild speculation surrounding the cause of his death. His family have moved to quash the rumours and innuendo, saying: "It's awful, the allegations from suicide, drugs, alcohol poisoning to murder and eight-hour drinking binges." A post mortem carried out by Spanish authorities confirmed that the Boyzone star died from natural causes, but today there have been unsupported claims that cannabis may have been a factor. "The post mortem results confirmed it, and it was clear from the start, that Stephen died from natural causes. "His death was not caused by drink, it was not caused by drugs. They didn't contribute to Stephen's death." The family hope that by outlining their position in such strong terms that speculation will stop. An autopsy revealed that Stephen died as a result of a congenial heart defect that is hereditary on his father's side of the family. http://www.belfastte...s-14533947.html
WannaGo
An autopsy revealed that Stephen died as a result of a congenial heart defect that is hereditary on his father's side of the family. That's one of the funnier newspaper misspellings I've seen in a while...I'm sure Gately didn't consider the defect very "congenial."
Wino
I guess some people do die of natural causes at 33 years of age, even though it was one of those congenial, congenital heart defects. I am glad that it was not drug-related like so many other stars that have gone before. Also shows the mean-spirited, Jan Moir that she was wrong. Wino
Here is another story about an early death of a 36 year old that appears to be of natural causes. Bruce Springsteen canceled a performance in Kansas City after his cousin and road crew member died. The death of 36-year-old Lenny Sullivan was announced in a statement on Springsteen's Web site. Sullivan was found dead at Kansas City's Intercontinental Hotel hours before Springsteen and the E Street Band were to take the stage Monday night. Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Rich Lockhart said officers were investigating the death, although he said it was not suspicious. A call to Springsteen's publicist was not immediately returned. http://new.music.yah...death--61995618
Wino
This article by Edna Brady might be good news to you Boyzone fans.
