lvdkeyes Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 'Nine letter word' What if this was the only question on the exam to pass High School English and earn your diploma. Would you graduate? Okay you brainiacs, here is a brain teaser for you. What nine letter word in the English language is still a word when each of the nine letters is removed one by one? Take a few minutes to try and come up with a nine letter word that fits the bill.
Beer Chang Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Letters can be removed from the middle of the word, right?
lvdkeyes Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 Yes, a letter can be removed from anywhere in the word one at a time, but when you remove a letter the remaining letters must spell a word.
lvdkeyes Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 Since no one on this board was able to give a correct answer, here goes: STARTLING STARTING STARING STRING STING SING SIN IN I On another board someone came up with another one: ROADSTERS ROASTERS RASTERS RATERS RATES RATS RAT AT A
WannaGo Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I had to look up RASTERS... This is what Merriam-Webster's had: A scan pattern (as of the electron beam in a cathode-ray tube) in which an area is scanned from side to side in lines from top to bottom; also : a pattern of closely spaced rows of dots that form an image (as on the cathode-ray tube of a television or computer display)
lvdkeyes Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 I had to look that one up too.
finebyme Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Speaking of nine, what is the 9-letter word that has only one vowel? And what is the 6-letter word that does not have any?
eleothegreat Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 9 letter word with one vowel: Strengths! 6 letter word without any vowel: SYZYGY and no, I did not use Google. Haha! Kidding.
lvdkeyes Posted October 31, 2009 Author Report Posted October 31, 2009 AHA! But "y" is sometimes a vowel.
eleothegreat Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 It is? Or it just sounds like a vowel.
lvdkeyes Posted November 3, 2009 Author Report Posted November 3, 2009 What I learned in school was the vowels were: "a, e i, o, u and sometimes y."
finebyme Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 The puzzle was easy, wasn't it? I am not sure about y as a vowel. That is something new. I was taught only 5 vowels in grade school. Send more puzzles.
lvdkeyes Posted November 4, 2009 Author Report Posted November 4, 2009 Google vowels and you will see that Y is a vowel sometimes.
finebyme Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 Ok. I will take your word for it. Feel free to send in more grammar tips. Thanks.
lvdkeyes Posted November 4, 2009 Author Report Posted November 4, 2009 There are others on this board who are more qualified.
