CrazyExpat
BANGKOK -- Police say suspected insurgents detonated a bomb as two truckloads of soldiers passed, wounding seven troops in Thailand's restive south. Police Lt. Heraman Jehdee says the attack happened Monday afternoon soon after the vehicles with 38 soldiers left a camp in Bo-ngo sub-district in Narathiwat province. He says police found a gas canister at the scene used to plant the mobile phone-triggered explosive device. More than 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand's three southern provinces since an Islamist insurgency flared in 2004. The provinces are the only Muslim-majority areas in the predominantly Buddhist country, and Muslims have long complained of discrimination by the central government. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/08/AR2010020801031.html
Beer Chang
Problem is that the Thai Muslims have no leader to negotiate with.
Wino
No leader and what are their demands? Do they want an independent state? Do they want to be part of Malaysia?
lvdkeyes
It is not all Thai Muslims who are causing the problems, just a small group who seem to be without an identified leader. They are wanting to have a separate country of their own, not to be part of Malaysia.
Wino
You never hear about the Buddhist Thais causeing problems in the South. I wonder why?
lvdkeyes
Because the Buddhist Thais are not wanting to separate from Thailand.
