Funds ready to restructure Thai rail

BANGKOK, 4 October 2012: Travel by train could become more convenient in the future now a Thai government budget of Bt176.8 billion has been approved to improve the country’s aging railway system.

State Railway of Thailand deputy governor, Viroj Triampongpan, said the government allocated the budget to finance a five-year restructuring plan.

The project will involve buying new locomotives, construction of parallel rail tracks, improvements to existing rail tracks, signal systems and telecommunications.

“The improvement start with developing rail services on two important routes,” he said identifying the trunk routes Bangkok-Chiang Mai and Bangkok-Butterworth.

“We will also emphasise cleanliness, punctually and introduce internet Wi-Fi on these routes, he added.
