Udon
Thani is an important Thai Province situated in the northeast of
the Country, about 560 km from Bangkok. The province is reachable
from Bangkok by road and the airport at Udon Thani City caters
for regular domestic flights. Udon City is the administrative capital
of the Udon Province. This province experienced considerable economic
growth and political prominence when during the Vietnam War; the
United States Army established military bases here. These bases
were officially handed over in 1976 to the Thai Military following
the conclusion of the War. The Udon Thani Province covers an area
of 11,730 square km with an estimated population of 1.5 million
people.
Archaeological findings over the last century have confirmed
beliefs that the area has been settled for at least a thousand
years. The Ban Chiang area has been the scene of a number of
interesting findings such as; ornaments, pottery and ceramics,
utensils and tools.
Tourism and Travel:
Udon City has a very vibrant and entertaining nightlife. The
City is home to a number of beer gardens, karaoke bars, discotheques
and pubs. There are also a number of good restaurants and cafes
to visit.
Interesting places to visit in Udon province include: Na Yoong
Nam Som Forest which features the scenic Yoong Thong Waterfalls,
the Phru Phra Bat Park, the Nong Prachak Lake and the Phra Phutthabat
Bua Bok Pagoda.
