The
Thai Province of Rayong is situated approximately 174 km from Bangkok
in the east of the Country in the Gulf of Thailand. Rayong is famed
for its beautiful sandy beaches along an extensive coastline about
100 km long. The province has an estimated population of 533, 023
people. The town of Rayong (typical of most provincial headquarters
in Thailand, the Capital shares the same name as the province)
is the Capital of Rayong Province.
Rayong has its importance in Thai history. It was here that
King Phaya Tak and a group of loyal soldiers fled to in order
to recoup from heavy losses inflicted by invading Burmese forces.
Phaya Tak reorganized his forces and navy and proceeded to oust
the Burmese.
Economy:
Fishing dominates the local economy, and the region is known
for being a leading producer of fish sauce.
Tourism and Travel:
The province has a fairly developed tourism industry that is
yet to reach its full potential.
Rayong is easily reached by road from Bangkok by bus. The area
has some of the best beaches in the Country. Popular beaches
are; the Hat Mae Rampheung, Hat Saeng Chan, Ao Noi Na, Ao Hin
Khok and Hat Sai Kaeo.
Other major attractions in the region are; the Shrine in Honor
of King Phaya Tak, Ko Samet Island, Suphattraland Orchard and
the Khao Wong National Park.
