Nakhon
Ratchasima city is the Capital of the Nakhon Ratchasima Province
in the north east of Thailand on the shores of the River Mun. It
is also one of the largest cities in the Country with an estimated
population of 204,641 people. Nakhon Ratchasima is also known by
locals as Khorat City. The City and surrounding regions developed
mainly due to its significance as a centre of governance and trade
in the Khmer Empire which had spread its influence in large parts
of the region. The Khmer cultural and religious influences are
still largely present in the city and province and are evident
in ancient ruins and local communities.
Economy:
Nakhon Ratchasima is the main economic centre in the north east
of Thailand. The City and surrounding regions are home to over
4,000 manufacturing and processing industries. Agriculture here
produces; rice, sugarcane, peanuts, jute and tapioca.
Tourism and travel:
The City is served by the Nakhon Ratchasima Airport which mainly
conducts domestic flights. Khorat City has a healthy tourism
industry. The City’s main landmark is the statue of Khunying
Mo a legendary heroine in local folklore. The monument was
constructed in 1933. There are also a number of ancient ruins
from the Khmer
empire, museums and local cultural villages. You can also find
quality ceramic items, handicraft and hand-woven silk.
