Lampang
is a town in the northern Thai Province of Lampang home to an estimated
148,199 people. The town has a long and interesting history dating
back to the 11th Century when it was established as the Kingdom
of Khelang Nakorn. The City is home to the Wat Phra Thart
Lampang Luang temple which for three decades housed the Emerald Buddha
Statue which was later kept in the Wat Chedi Luang temple in the
City of Chang Mai. Lampang is unique in many ways having kept intact
most of its culture and traditions. The City is famous for its
horse drawn carriages which are still used as a means of transport
ferrying locals to and from the market place and around town. These
carriages can also be hired by tourists and are a good way of viewing
various sites within the City.
Economy:
Lampang is a leading producer of pottery and ceramics. Hangchat
is the main ceramic industry zone and it is here where you will
find a number of ceramic plants. Goods produced include; dolls,
pots, flower vases, cups and mugs. Other prominent industries
in the province are the production of concrete and limestone
mining.
Tourism and Travel:
Tourist attractions in the Lampang province include; the Wang
Kaeo Waterfall, Chae Son National Park and Tham Pha Thai National
Park. Lampang City also has a number of ancient temples such
as; the Wat Phra Chetuwan Temple, Wat Phra Gaew Don Tao and Wat
Phra Thart Lampang.
