Situated
in the southern Thai Province of Surat Thani, the Khao Sok National
Park is home to one of the oldest virgin rainforest remnants in
the world. The Park covers an estimated 739 km2. The best possible
time to visit would be during the dry season between December and
February. The Park was established in 1980 to protect this unique
vegetation and the wildlife that existed within the ecosystem.
You can reach Khao Sok by traveling by road or air from Bangkok
to either Surat Thani or Krabi, then traveling by road to the
park.
Wildlife at the Park:
Khao Sok is home to healthy populations of; elephant, leopard,
mouse deer, tiger, barking deer and bear. Insects and reptiles
found at the parks include; tarantula, scorpion, king cobra,
spitting cobra, python and the tree frog. There is also a variety
of bird species.
Quality accommodation is provided at the Earth Lodge situated
at the shores of the Sok River.
Things to do:
Khao Sok is a haven for adventure tourists and nature lovers,
the park can be toured on foot or by land rover. Other popular
activities include; canoeing or rafting on the Sok River and
elephant trekking.
