Thailand
has fairly developed medical services which can be ranked amongst
the best in the region. In each town or district, you can find
a medical centre or hospital, most of which are well equipped and
kept in good conditions. Larger cities like Bangkok have some of
the best hospitals in the region and some private medical institutions.
Many doctors here speak good English. Pharmacies are also widely
available many staying open between 8am and 8pm.
Health problems in the country:
HIV/AIDS is still a problem in Thailand with over half a million
people living with the disease. The first bird flu deaths in
the country appeared in 2004 when the deadly virus claimed six
lives. This led to a ban on poultry imports from Thailand by
a number of countries.
Food and Water Hygiene:
Common sense should prevail when eating out in Thailand. Do
not buy anything that looks suspicious and always eat hot cooked
food. Tap water in many parts of the country is not very hygienic
and bottled water is readily available and is also consumed by
many Thais. Wash fruit and vegetables before eating with clean
water, and avoid salads at least for the first few days.
