Though
violent crime is not a serious problem in Thailand, visitors should
take standard precautions when visiting the Country. Women especially
should not visit isolated areas alone or during night time. Traveling
around the country and going out at night to clubs and pubs is
best done in a group. Do not accept food or drink from passengers
on long distance buses or trains. There have been a number of incidences
where people get robbed after passing out from taking food from
strangers on such trips.
In Bangkok, pick pocketing and bag snatching is still a
problem. Do not unnecessarily walk around with valuables and
you should
increase your self awareness when traveling on public vehicles
or walking in crowded areas.
Thailand has a special Tourist Police force which can be contacted
to remote a crime on 1155. This is a toll free number and the
operators are multilingual. You should however not develop a
sense of paranoia that may inhibit the chances of enjoying your
holiday. Crime rates in the country and even in the Capital Bangkok
are at tolerable levels.
The Royal Thai Police is a professional force with a respectable
record of dealing with crime and law enforcement. The police
here are helpful and will readily assist visitors.
