Chiang Rai City:
Chiang
Rai is a northern Thai City and the Capital of the Chiang Rai Province.
The Province is bordered to its north by Burma. The City has a
population of 61,188 residents. Chiang Rai enjoyed a short lived
spell as the Capital of the Lannathai Kingdom under King Mengrai
between 1262(the same year the city was founded) and 1296, when
it was replaced by the City of Chiang Mai. The City and surrounding
regions were also under occupation by the Burmese until the area
was liberated by King Taksin.
The Province of Chiang Rai was created in 1910 when the area was
incorporated into the Thai Kingdom.
Tourism and travel:
Chiang Rai is a fairly small town and most of it can be easily
seen in a day or two. The City’s main attractions are its
historic temples such as; Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Doi Tong and Wat
Phra Singh.
Chiang Rai is also used as a base for a tour of the “golden
triangle” which encompasses the towns of Sop Ruak, Mai
Sai and the ancient town of Chiang Saen. The City is served by
the Chiang Rai International Airport which caters mainly for
domestic flights from Bangkok.
