The
Public transport system in Thailand is very cheap and affordable
even for long distance land transport. You would expect to pay
less than 50 American cents to travel to most inner city destinations.
Vehicle transport within most cities consists of; the three wheeled “tuk
tuks” and the “songthaews”. These are spontaneous
forms of transport and rarely do they follow a timetable.
Tuk tuks:
Tuk tuks are three wheeled motorized scooters with a seat at
the back that can carry about two people. The tuk tuk has for
years been a popular means of transport for tourists to Bangkok.
They are not metered and you have to bargain and agree on a fare
before boarding.
Songthaews:
Songthaews are a passenger transport vehicle that is an adaptation
from a pickup or lorry with two rows of seats (benches) on either
side of the vehicle. They are a common form of transport and
ply a routes within cities and to nearby towns.
Buses:
Comfortable air conditioned buses are used for long distance
travel. These are not really expensive though there are buses
without air con that can be uncomfortable for long journeys.
Inner city buses are numbered depending on their destinations.
